WikiThis is a featured page

The idea to use a wiki came from many different cultural stimulants. First the use of MySpace and Friendster sites where people create fake personas and project this image of themselves to anyone who has internet access. This is a classic example of narcissism. It comes from the reality that we live in a culture where people can pretend like they are anything they want to be. Everyone hides behind these masks of subculture. I am an activist. I am a hippy. I am a punk. I am hip-hop. I am black. I am white. I am rich. I am poor. I am an artist. We label ourselves all these things in order to be something other than just ourselves. I have 100 friends on MySpace and you only have 10. I graduated from Cornish. I this… I that… Really what does any of it mean?

We are using this wiki:
  • To be challenged to project our real selves
  • To show our real feelings,
  • To show our real ideas
  • And our real reaction to other people’s ideas
  • To open the faults and successes up to everyone
  • To revel in our imperfection
  • To laugh in the face of everyone who tried and tries to oppress us.

The wiki idea also came out of the fact that so much of our communication comes from email and text messages. Our community, our friendships are spread out over the globe. Globalization is becoming a reality. We are using the Internet because it truly allows practically anyone to join. Our biggest obstacle is that the Internet is still a sign of affluence.

When you communicate through words over the web.Your words only have meaning. In order to give inflections and body language it all has to be written out. It simplifies and alienates communication to the point of making it immensely difficult. Trying to communicate complex artistic ideas quickly turns into this game of cat and mouse. Because it makes it so easy to have misunderstandings everything is clarified to the point of exhaustion.

We are making a show about narcissism where everyone can see it because a narcissist biggest fear is too be exposed for whom they really are. In exposing ourselves we challenge that piece of ourselves that is narcissistic. We challenge ourselves to grow and not accept the norms of capitalism. Capitalism is oppression and oppression and narcissism go hand in hand.

guess i have more of an opinion than I thought i would : )

I agree that affluence and also literacy in English afftect peoples ability to participate.

Not sure if you mean accept or except in the second to last sentence. Do you mean except like excuse or accept? Either one works, just wanted to clarify for visualization's sake. The last couple lines feel like they're about to lead into something, maybe this could be another layer in, just leaving the idea of "Narcissm" up to the viewer -uh reader, still.

One of the reasons the global village is growing is because of the use of the english language. Maybe one of the layers of communication - audio synchronizing with some repeated actions, or as an arc over a vignette of some sort. ok, I guess this belongs in another page now.
Do you find this valuable?
